The Experiences of First-Time Fathers in Perinatal Services: Present but Invisible

Fathers in the UK are becoming more involved care of their infants and children. A constructivist grounded theory approach was adopted to explore men’s transition fatherhood. This paper reports on one sub-categories derived from data. First-time fathers with a child under two were recruited predominantly via social media. Audio-recorded semi-structured interviews undertaken an opening question asking men tell story father. Interviews transcribed analysed using methods. core aspect research findings which has particular relevance for healthcare professionals. The this study highly appreciative partner baby received but consistently reported lack father-specific support throughout journey ranged generally poor communication professionals being ignored side-lined maternity settings where they continued be treated as visitors before, during after birth baby. Despite similar over last 30 40 years policy directives emphasising importance working fathers, change within services remains slow. Currently, fathers’ needs not adequately met by perinatal services.
